Francis Bacon: five decades

We are just one week away from opening our major summer exhibition Francis Bacon: five decades and to celebrate we have an entire Artmail dedicated to one of the most exciting painters of the 20th century. We’ve included information about the many associated programs and events which explore the life and work of Bacon – there’s sure to be one that interests you.

Francis Bacon: five decades is the first exhibition of his work in Australia, and is part of the Sydney International Art Series. Over 50 paintings (including some of his best known triptychs) will be on show as well as a wealth of archival material from his chaotic London studio, offering a fascinating insight into the artist and his creative process. The works have been drawn from 37 collections including Tate Britain in London, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Make sure you look out for the special feature in the Spectrum section of this weekend’s The Sydney Morning Herald and the Life&Style section of The Age, which includes an article by curator Anthony Bond highlighting key works in the Francis Bacon exhibition plus an interview with Wendy Whiteley on Brett Whiteley’s London years when the two artists met.

Film

Hitting rock bottom in post-war England | Until 17 Feb

This series of films covers from the post-World War II period to the late 1980s and composes a riveting survey of the changing social structure in Britain.

The films transport us from Bacon’s Soho nightworld to Pinteresque ‘no man’s lands’, exploring the effects of the war, austerity, disaffected youth and the seedy, hypocritical Puritanism that regulated a class-ridden British society.
