education update

Term 2, 2012

Art Gallery NSW

Art Gallery of NSW on Google Art Project

Dear colleague,

Over 25 000 students visited the Gallery to see Picasso: masterpieces from the Musée National Picasso, Paris and ARTEXPRESS in Term 1. It was wonderful to see so many familiar and new faces experience these significant exhibitions.

The new accredited professional development Art Gallery of NSW Learning symposium also attracted over 150 teachers and tertiary students. We hope the new format and timeslot will support your schedules. The new topic for 2013 will be announced soon.

New education poster

Look out for the new education poster being posted to every school in NSW this week. K–6 and 7–12 programs, exhibitions and dates for the next six months are now on the website.

Australian collection

The rehang of the Australian art collection opened on Saturday 12 May. Your favourite artworks and recent acquisitions are presented in a whole new context. Look out for the wonderful ‘interventions’ showing contemporary practice alongside traditional 20th century art styles and themes. Online resource material will support your visit as well as classroom learning.

Archibald Prize

The Archibald Prize is always a great topic for debate. Online resource material will further enrich Visual Arts discussion in the classroom.

Biennale of Sydney

The Art Gallery of NSW returns as a major venue for the 18th Biennale of Sydney: all our relations in 2012 and will present 27 artists and 90 artworks. Subtitled In Finite Blue Planet, the artists featured at the Gallery explore the idea of the macrocosm, sometimes picturing the planet from afar with its movements of migration and globalisation.

Two exciting, new online resources

The Gallery channel has now been launched with recent and archive footage of talks by artists, curators and specialists.

In April 2012 Google Art Project stage 2 went live, featuring 450 works from the collection of the Art Gallery of NSW. This online resource offers teachers and students high-resolution images of objects, a 3D walkthrough called museumview and one key work, Fire’s on 1891 by Tom Roberts, as a gigapixel resolution image. Enjoy getting up close to the works of art.

Read more about it on the Gallery's blog.
